Chronique des anciens combattants des Brigades Internationales en Espagne
Il y a plus de cinquante ans débutait la guerre civile en Espagne. Elle dura trois ans. Elle déchira l’Europe. De juillet 1936 à mars 1939, plus de 40.000 hommes et femmes partirent aider la République et le peuple espagnol contre Franco et ses Alliés : les Etats fascistes européens. Ils venaient de tous les pays, mus par un engagement libre et personnel. Ils combattirent pour une cause que leurs gouvernements se refusèrent à soutenir, jusqu’à ce qu’ils subissent à leur tour la menace de la peste brune.
À l’heure où cette génération s’efface, nous donnons la parole aux Anciens des Brigades Internationales, afin qu’ils nous parlent de leur lutte, de leur motivation et leurs destinées.Nous pensons ainsi confronter leur histoire individuelle avec l’Histoire. Car les Brigades Internationales sont le miroir d’une histoire du siècle.
Miroir fragmenté, miroir éclaté, miroir terni, miroir plein d’illusions et de mythe peut-être ; miroir incertain comme sont les années d’aujourd’hui ; miroir sans fin.

Chronicles of Hope The International Brigades in Spain
The Spanish Civil War was a major event for XXth century history. From July 1936 to March 1939, almost 40 000 people engaged in defending their ideals on foreign territory. The source of this movement was spontaneous, outside of any pre-existant framework. Only when faced with the influx of volunteers did the communists, anarchists, trotskyists and members of other parties begin to organize themselves.
After such a long lapse of time, the brigade fighters can now look back and speak openly about their deeper motivations without being heavy-handed, free of the wish to settle old scores. We are interested not only in their testimonies but in their attitudes towards post-Civil War history : we also aim to discover their own personal life stories, the paths they followed before and after 1936.
We have no intention of fitting the events of the war into any unequivocal political mould ; it is their human dimension that we wish to illuminate.
